FROM ROCK TO RHÔNE... AND BEYOND

If you would have asked a young Eric Solomon what he wanted to do when he grew up, he would have told you he wanted to be a rock drummer, or a classically-trained percussionist, in earshot of his parents. So at 18 he found himself in London as the understudy to the principal percussionist for the London Symphony Orchestra as well as a rock-drummer in several bands. Neither position paid well, so it was pure luck that walking into his neighborhood wine bar looking for employment, he would discover his true vocation. Starting as a bartender, the lanky yank caught the attention of the proprietor for his aptitude and eagerness to learn and soon he was making selections for the wine list. Eventually he was sponsored to the Institute of Masters of Wine where he excelled in its rigorous course of study. Unfortunately this was cut short when the UK government realized that he had overstayed his student visa.

For his pioneering efforts, Eric has been recognized by Robert Parker as his Wine Personality of the Year for 2002, remarking, “Solomon has a great talent for ferreting out spectacular wines from France and Spain. The quality of these selections is remarkable.” In 2006 he was awarded Best Importer of the Year by Food and Wine Magazine and he has been a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Writing in celebration of European Cellars’ 25th anniversary, Robert Parker followed on his earlier praise, writing, “I first tasted with Eric in 1991/1992, and I have watched him grow as an importer to the point where he may be the finest in the United States.”

Finca Museum came about as the start of the expansion process by Grupo Barón de Ley outside La Rioja region, where it originated. Seeking vine-growing areas where it was possible to maintain the right value for money, the Grupo looked towards the Cigales Appellation of Origin region. Village by village, plaza by plaza, asking all the locals, we finally found a singular vineyard where to build a spectacular winery that today bears the name Finca Museum. In 1999 we elaborated a test year at an external winery and aged the wine in a former hermitage in Cigales. One year later, the first bottle of Finca Monasterio by Grupo Barón de Ley wine was opened made that year. A new history began.                                           Learn More

Ours is a family business, in the sense that everything that really matters is within our history, rooted with us in the land of Abruzzo and always handed down. Deep down we are still farmers: everything else changes, grows, evolves with the times, but not so the family core, the true way in which work, and life are faced. The main custodians of this tradition are today Carlo and Adriano Spinelli, the two sons of the founder Vincenzo.                              Learn More

Terra d'Aligi is the excellent brand of a company and a family (Spinelli) that have been producing wine for generations. They describe us as true Abruzzese: feet on the ground and looking ahead. It probably is. Down to earth are the love for the territory and the deep knowledge of what it can produce, the innate ability to test the terrain, to feel the air, to understand the potential of the terroirs.

Roberto Cosimi bought 65 hectares of land with the money he had saved up by selling agricultural machinery. When he made the first bottle of Brunello in Montalcino there were only 28 producers. For my father, producing his own bottles was an enormous satisfaction. I proudly carry on his work by creating an increasingly refined artisan product, appreciated by wine lovers from my Montalcino area. Today is owned and operated by his son, Rodolfo.

Be Willing to Offer Training

Most wineries are happy to host on-site winery tours, provide staff training, and supply tasting tools, including sample bottles. We know you're on board with education, so let's chat!
